Cut Circle’s assertive performances of Renaissance music emphasize rhythmic energy and affective variety. Founded in 2003 by Jesse Rodin, the ensemble has been praised for its "fabulous,” “masterful,” “spirited,” “scholarly,” and “gravity-defying” performances. Our forthcoming recording, entitled De Orto and Josquin: Music in the Sistine Chapel ca. 1490, will appear this fall with the Belgian label Musique en Wallonie. Cut Circle engages critically with questions of performance practice, particularly with 15th-century “tempo markings.” We are named for a mensuration sign (much like a modern time signature) used mainly to indicate a fast triple meter.
